What is a Warrant Canary?

A warrant canary is a method by which a service provider can inform users that they have NOT been served with a secret government subpoena or warrant. Because certain legal orders (like National Security Letters) come with gag orders preventing disclosure, providers cannot say they HAVE received such orders.

However, they CAN simply stop saying they haven't. If this canary stops being updated, is removed, or the signature becomes invalid, it may indicate that the operator has received a legal order they cannot disclose.

Verify the signature: Download the operator's public PGP key and verify this statement is authentically signed. The statement should be re-signed every 6 months with a current date.
